How it works

Three steps, no detours.

KM 01

Book ahead

Set a pickup time, a flight number or an event end time. The fare shows in CAD before you confirm.

KM 02

Driver confirmed in advance

Your driver's name, vehicle and plate arrive the day before, dispatched locally rather than from a queue in another country.

KM 03

Tracked and invoiced

Live GPS on the day, and a receipt or monthly invoice ready for accounting.

Service area

One region, one network: Ottawa and Gatineau.

Twelve zones on both sides of the Ottawa River, served by drivers licensed in Ontario and Québec, so a cross‑river trip is one booking and one fare.

Why it matters

What Canadian‑owned actually changes.

Not a slogan on the door — it shapes how fares are set, where your data lives, and who's accountable when a Nor'easter hits.

Professional, always

Background‑checked drivers who take pride in every trip — vetted for winter‑tire compliance and cold‑weather readiness before they're approved on the network.

Canadian owned, Canadian run

Incorporated in Canada, headquartered in Canada, paying Canadian corporate tax on Canadian income — not a regional franchise of a foreign platform.

Data stays home

Trip history and payment records are stored on servers inside Canada, governed by Canadian privacy law — not exported by default.

Clear, storm‑proof pricing

Upfront CAD fares before you book — and no surge multiplier during a severe weather advisory.

Community & safety

Had a few too many? Get everyone home safe.

RideCan is a ride any night of the year. Separately, during the holiday season, volunteer-run Opération Nez Rouge (Operation Red Nose) will drive you and your car home if you've had too much to drink, escorted by a second vehicle — donation-based, and worth knowing about.

RideCan is not affiliated with Operation Red Nose / Opération Nez Rouge. We share it because we want everyone to get home safe.

Driver requirements & applicationᐊᐅᓚᑦᑎᔩᑦ ᐱᔭᕆᐊᖃᖅᑕᐅᔪᑦ ᑐᒃᓯᕋᐅᑎᓗ

RideCan drivers in Ottawa operate under the City of Ottawa's rules for Private Transportation Companies (PTCs) in the Vehicle-for-Hire By-law 2016-272. Drivers must hold an Ontario licence; trips start in Ottawa and can end on either side of the river. To drive with us you'll need:

You, the driver

  • A valid, unrestricted Ontario Class G licence. RideCan accepts Ontario licences only s. 143(1)(a)
  • A Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within 90 days before you start, then renewed every year s. 143(1)(b)
  • Your Ontario driver's record (abstract), dated within 30 days before you start, then every year s. 143(1)(c)
  • A signed declaration, every year, that you have no outstanding criminal charges or warrants s. 143(1)(d)
  • Trips must be pre-booked through RideCan: no street hails, no taxi stands, and no cash payments s. 148

Your vehicle

  • Carries no more than 6 passengers plus the driver s. 1
  • Less than 10 model years old s. 147(1)(c)
  • An Ontario Safety Standards Certificate before you start, then every year if the vehicle is 5 years old or less, or every 6 months if it's older s. 147(1)(a)
  • A valid vehicle permit (registration) s. 147(1)(b)
  • Auto insurance of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence, including the 6TN endorsement (permission to carry paying passengers for a ride-hailing company). The driver, RideCan, or both together can hold it s. 144
  • RideCan policy: winter tires from December 1 to March 15

Trips into Québec

  • Pickups are in Ontario only
  • One‑way drop‑offs in Gatineau and the Outaouais are fine: drop your passenger, then return to Ottawa empty
  • Don't pick up passengers in Québec, including for a return trip. That requires separate Québec authorization, which RideCan doesn't hold yet

What it costs you

City of Ottawa driver licence$0: PTC drivers aren't licensed individually; RideCan holds the company licence
